Velma Ethel Gentry
November 7, 1927 – May 3, 2015
Velma Gentry, 87, of Bryan, went to be with her Lord on May 3, 2015. She was born on November 7, 1927 to Oscar J. Bryant and Lillie Mae (Wood) Bryant. Velma attended school in Iola, Texas. She spent many years working as a waitress in Bryan, including at the LaSalle Hotel and working in the cafeteria at St. Joseph Hospital. She also worked as a personal caregiver for family and friends, freely giving her time and love to others.
Velma was an active member of Northview Baptist Church in Bryan until her health made that difficult. She was known as a good cook. Velma was proud to share her recipes with others, especially the ones published in her church cookbook. She appreciated opportunities to serve others.
She is preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Dalton R. Gentry; daughters, Linda Crew and Patsy Syphrett; and siblings, Mary Lillian Williams, Floyd Bryant, William “Billy” Bryant, Wilma McClendon, and Thelma Hickson.
Velma leaves behind a daughter, Wanda Edgington; a sister, Doris Shifflett; grandchildren, Jimmey R. Sheeley, Theresa Robertson, Aaron Syphrett, Ashley Syphrett, Carol M. Holbrook, and Jessie Crew; along with six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Velma will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as friends, neighbors, and fellow church members.
