James Sloss Lewis

James S. Lewis left his earthly body for a home in glory on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at the age of 96. Jim was born on November 27, 1918 at the family home on a farm near Arden, Arkansas to Hugart “Hudy” Livingston Lewis and Margaret “Maggie” Davis Lewis. He had three siblings; an older sister, Jewel Faye, and two younger brothers, Davis and Robbie.
Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Frances, his parents, his sister and his brothers and many close friends.
After graduating from Ashdown high school in 1937, he enlisted in the Navy. He completed his 4-year tour in the Navy in the summer of 1941and enrolled at Texas A&M University, a member of the Class of 1945. During his junior year he held a position on Corp Staff and was a member of the Ross Volunteers. At the end of his junior year he was selected by the United States Army to serve on active duty and attend Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas.
While in dental school, Jim attended First Baptist Church in Dallas. It was there that he met the love of his life, Frances Lusk. Jim and Frances were married in September, 1946. He completed dental school the following year. Jim and Frances went to New Braunfels and fell in love with the town. Jim practiced dentistry in New Braunfels from 1947 to 1993. Dr. Lewis was known to be a very skilled and gentle dentist. Some of his patients who moved away from New Braunfels would even return for dental appointments.
Jim was also involved in his local church and community. He served on the Board of Directors for the United Methodist Church and was on the Church’s Building Committee. He served as President of the local Rotary Club. He represented the State of Texas in an International Meeting of Rotarians in Mexico City in 1951. He was on the New Braunfels City Planning Committee. He served on the New Braunfels Boy Scouts District Council.
In 1967, Jim became a part-time farmer and an accomplished horse showman. He especially loved palomino horses. He was a member of the National Board of Directors for the Palomino Horse Breeders Association for 20 years. He was President of the Texas Amateur Exhibitors Association of the Palomino Horse Breeders Association for 2 years. He raised several champion quarter horses. One of his horses was the great grandson of the famous racehorse, Man-O-War. In 2003, Jim was inducted into the Palomino Horse Breeders Association Hall of Fame.
Jim and Frances raised two children, a daughter, Dawn, and a son, Larry. He was a loving husband, a great father and a wonderful provider for the family. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor. Jim loved rocking his children when they were young, and he loved rocking his grandbabies and great grandbabies as well. He is survived by his daughter Dawn Blaschke and husband Joe, son Larry and wife Debbie, grandchildren Brandon Lewis and wife Rebecca, Becky Lewis, Kelli Lewis, Byron Blaschke and wife Kelly, David Blaschke and wife Jenny, great-grandchildren Emma Lewis, Kathryn Lewis, Ethan Blaschke, Layla Blaschke, Sophia Blaschke and Levi Blaschke.
The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the following agencies that provided care for Dad: Comfort Keepers, Hospice Brazos Valley, and Crestview Retirement Community.
Visitation will be Friday evening, July 17, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Hillier Funeral Home, 4080 Highway 6 S, College Station, TX 77845. Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 18, 2015, at 1:00 PM at Hillier Funeral Home College Station with internment to follow at College Station Memorial Cemetery.
