Henry Thomas “Tommy” Bosquez, 53, of Bryan, Texas, went to be with the Lord on September 12, 2015.
A time for family to receive friends will be from 4:00-7:30 PM on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Hillier Funeral Home in College Station, Texas. A prayer service will follow at 7:30 PM at Hillier Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 10:00 AM at Central Baptist Church, 1991 FM 158 Road in College Station. Interment will take place at Aggie Field of Honor. Afterwards, a celebration of life and roast will occur at Central Baptist Church Family Life Center.
Tommy was born on August 9, 1962 to Roy Sr. and Margaret Bosquez in Bryan, Texas. He graduated from Bryan High School in 1980. He received his undergraduate degree in political science ‘89 and his master’s degree in public administration ‘95 from Texas A&M University. Tommy also held an Associate’s degree in law enforcement from Blinn College.
In 1982, Tommy began his public service career by being sworn in as the youngest police officer at the age of 19, serving eight years working with the City of Bryan. He held various assignments including patrol, special advanced traffic investigations, the Field Training Officer program, crime scene analysis, and honor guard detail. Six months prior to receiving his undergraduate degree, he joined the Texas A&M University System in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Human Resources. From 1999 to 2005, Tommy assumed a leadership role with the Health Science Center serving as Special Assistant to the President and leading closely aligned strategic initiatives working collaboratively with state-wide stakeholders to provide legislative strategy, coalition building, and public health initiatives.
From 1992 to 1999, Tommy served at the Texas A&M University College of Medicine in the capacity of Director of Special Programs, Special Assistant to the Dean of Medicine, admissions committee member, and was on the faculty as a lecturer in the Department of Humanities in Medicine teaching courses on medical ethics, leadership in medicine, culture health, and illness. He served as a principal investigator receiving more than $ 6 million in federal grants and contracts, spanning from basic research science training to directing a Center of Excellence related to community health improvement.
From 1989 until 1994, Tommy was a member of the Texas State Guard, a component of the Texas Military Forces, reporting to the Texas Adjutant General located at Texas Military Forces HQ, Camp Mabry (Austin) Texas. He was commissioned a second lieutenant serving as company commander in the 223rd Military Police Battalion, to assist state and local authorities in time of state emergencies.
Tommy was an active volunteer and engaged parent in the Bryan Independent School District for over 25 years. He began his service as an elected school board trustee in 2012 and served as vice president.
He served extensively on various local and statewide charitable and educational organization boards such as the Texas Association for Access and Equity, Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions, Texas AHEC East, B-CS Chamber of Commerce, Bryan ISD Education Foundation, Blinn College Advisory Board, United Way, Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Kiwanis, Gear Up, Habitat for Humanity, and Junior Achievement, to name a few. Tommy was an active member of Central Baptist Church and was involved with Awana and Upward Basketball.
Tommy received many acknowledgments throughout his career including the 2007 TACHE Outstanding Meritorious Public Service Award and the Kiwanis International Walter Zeller Fellowship Award.
He is preceded in death by brothers Roy Bosquez Jr. of Bryan and David Bosquez of Dallas.
Tommy leaves behind his loving wife of 29 years, Stella Grimaldo Bosquez; children Courtney and Kimberly.
Survivors also include parents Roy Sr. and Margaret Bosquez of Bryan; one sister Becky Fava and husband Arnulfo of College Station; three brothers: Robert Bosquez and wife Nancy of Caldwell, Michael Bosquez and wife Karen of Iola, Richard Bosquez and wife Lisa of Katy; numerous nieces and nephews, friends, co-workers, Aggie Family, and a grateful community and nation.
As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to a memorial fund established at Aggieland Credit Union in memory of Tommy. “The Tommy Bosquez Kiwanis Scholarship” has been named in honor of his diligent work and mentoring of youth in the Bryan- College Station community.
