Sally Salazar
In Notes on Nursing, Florence Nightingale writes: “Let whoever is in charge keep this simple question in her head[… ]how can I provide for this right thing to be always done?” Sally Salazar directed her life and career by that credo as a mother and Licensed Vocational Nurse. She passed away Sunday, November 8, 2015, at age 67.
Sally lived in Bryan all her life, which began on August 10, 1948, as she was welcomed to Earth by her parents, Filemon Salazar and Martha Medina. One of four children, Sally eventually attended Stephen F. Austin High School—with her closely-knit circle of friends—and graduated as Valedictorian. Studious and reserved as a teenager, Sally served as a bilingual interpreter on medical missions in Guatemala, where she developed an interest in nursing. After high school, Sally pursued her LVN degree and quietly began her service of forty years, changing the lives of her patients, as well as their families, for the better.
In time, this strong, remarkable woman married and gave birth to three children, then later raised them as a single mother; her motto was: Don’t mess with me or mine! Her sons, Richard Martinez and Michael Martinez, and her daughter, Diana Tolliver, remember their mother as the rock of the family, a giver with a generous heart who was fiercely loyal to and protective of those she loved, including her grandchildren. A member of St. Joseph’s parish, Sally appreciated the kindness of others. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, largely because she was grateful for the chance to celebrate her blessings, especially her family members.
The Life Celebration of Sally Salazar will be held on Friday, November 13 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 E. 29th Street in Bryan with Rosary recited at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 14 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 E 26th St, Bryan. Final commendation and blessing will follow at Bryan City Cemetery.
