Helen Rose Kubin Pope Helen Rose Kubin Pope passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 99. Helen was born in Bryan on December 1, 1916, she grew up on West 28th Street in the Czech Community of Bryan. Helen’s parents were Frank John Kubin Sr. and Helen Kuder Kubin. Helen was their only daughter, the middle child between two brothers, Frank Jr. and Edward, and she was the last surviving member of their family. Helen attended Bowie Elementary School and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School. She met her future husband, Clifton A. Pope, while working for Montgomery Ward in downtown Bryan. They married March 16, 1940 and their life together was lived in the Midwest as they moved every few years when Clifton was promoted in the Montgomery Ward organization. They retired in 1976 and moved back to Bryan from Shawnee, Oklahoma. They were married for 64 years until Clifton’s death in 2004. Helen is survived by her two daughters, Gail Sewell and Glenda Duncan (Bill); her grandchildren Rene’ Sewell Skaggs (Tom) and Nicholas Duncan and her three great-granddaughters Taylor and Avery Skaggs and Emma Duncan. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen Kubin; her brothers and their wives, Frank and Norma, and Edward and Leota; and her granddaughter Lorna Sewell Kessler. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Monday, December 21 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4221 Boonville Rd in Bryan with Pastor Randy Bard officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:30 until the funeral service at Bethel. The family wishes to thank the ladies who worked with their mother at St. Joseph Assisted Living facility and also those who worked at Station One at the Skilled Nursing Unit of St. Joseph Manor. Memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s honor to Bethel Lutheran Church, Hospice Brazos Valley, or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
