Beloved father and husband, Orus Morgan, Jr., passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2016. He was 79. Orus was born on November 24, 1936, in Port Arthur, TX, and moved to Hominy, Oklahoma at age ten. His parents, Lottie Mae Thompson and Orus Lee Morgan, Sr—a pipe fitter/farmer and devoted farmer’s wife—raised Orus to be a true farm boy, with a heritage and identity invested in caring for the earth and animals that he never left behind. While Orus and his younger brother James tended livestock and land with their father, their mother cooked three meals a day in her farm kitchen, always a willing and gracious hostess. When the Morgan boys weren’t hard at work on the farm, they attended a one-room school house and could often be found in the great outdoors, fishing and hunting for not only animals but also Indian artifacts and fossils. As their father’s occupation took him overseas to the Middle East, Orus ran his family’s farm and managed to excel as an all-star athlete in football, basketball and track. After graduating, Orus headed to Oklahoma State University and while there, he met his college sweetheart Lucy. They were married in the summer of 1958 at the Nazarene Church in Cleveland, OK. Orus received his Bachelors degree from the University of Tulsa in Management and Marketing, and over the years, he held positions with Shell Oil Company, D&B Oil Company, and the City of Bryan. Orus was happy to help assist with coaching his children’s sports teams and often volunteered with the Scouts. The Morgans enjoyed special trips to Hawaii, the Rockies, Europe, and family cruises. A family man, Orus was a determined and committed provider and took his roles as a husband and father seriously—later becoming a grandfather and great-grandfather—still, he liked to have fun. He enjoyed playing, joking and teasing his grandkids, and was delighted to be their “Babaw.” He regularly played pranks on his family members and was the life of the party when it came to their gatherings, where he loved to collect and share family stories—especially during the holidays—building a legacy of love and loyalty with those he cherished. Orus was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bryan Texas, an avid follower of OU football, and liked to garden and putter around his yard. After a critical illness, Orus remained determined to survive and later thrive as he concentrated on nurturing the relationships he loved most, with his family. Missing Orus most is his beloved wife Lucy, daughter, Lisa and husband, Dean Coffer, son, David Morgan and Orus’s brother, James Morgan. The other bright lights in his life—Orus’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren—also mourn his passing. Babaw, always remember: we love you! Join us in celebrating the life of Orus Morgan, beginning with Visitation (at 12:30pm) on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, with his Life Celebration following at 2pm and a reception thereafter from 3-4pm. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Share stories and memories of Orus at www.hillierfuneralhome.com. A special thanks to Dr. Stephen Braden and Dr. Gordon Mitchell for all the care of our loved one for 25 years.
