Gladys Marie Merka, 79, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014 in Houston, Texas. A time for family to receive friends will be from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Monday, January 27, 2014 at Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 E. 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77802. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, January 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a Rosary prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Gladys was born November 20, 1934 to Theresa Lero and Henry Merka in Brazos County. She was a 1962 graduate of Texas Woman’s University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. She worked for the VA Hospital in Temple, Texas for 26 years before retiring in 1988.
She was a resident of Temple, Texas for 49 years before moving to Houston to be near her family. She was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the Tri-City Gem and Mineral Society and a master gardener. Among her many interests were traveling, photography, rockhounding, gardening, floral arranging and volunteering at the VA Hospital Chapel. Her love of her church and her family was evident throughout her entire life.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Quin and husband Edward of Houston, nephew; David Quin and wife Kelley of Houston, nieces; Sandra Heaslet and husband Michael of Keller, and Kathleen Voss and husband Wil of Seattle, Washington, a great nephew and two great nieces.
