Donald Evans Northup
August 12, 1938 – January 25, 2015
Donald Evans Northup, 76 of Bryan, Texas died Sunday January 25, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital Bryan, Texas, after an illness. Services set for 10 AM Saturday, January 31, at Lawrence E Young Funeral Home in Summit, Pennsylvania. Interment will follow at Shoemaker Cemetery in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. Viewing will be held on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 4:00-7:00PM.
He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1938, to Maurice Edson Northup and Alvira Evans Northup.
Donald graduated from Lackawanna Trail High School and Keystone Junior College. He enlisted in The United States Army and served in the Army Security Agency. He was awarded the good conduct medal, marksman (carbine), and expert (rifle). He served his country in Viet Nam from 1959-1963 as a sniper and cryptographer.
Donald married Catherine Joan Dale on April 27, 1963, in Dalton Pennsylvania. Donald owned the Nicholson Sales Company and auctioneered there for many years before becoming an inspector for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
Donald won many awards for his shooting abilities, placing 2nd on a national scale in the sharpshooter class in pistol competition. He won numerous rifle awards, especially while shooting with a team from the 8th Armored Division in the Far East during his Army tour. He also captured the Pennsylvania NRA championship 1970-71 and the New York State NRA around the same time. He also captured the high place in the 1974 NRA Indoor Championship.
He was a member and former President of the Scranton National Rifle and Pistol Club, an accredited NRA instructor, instructor in the Scranton NRA club and the Lackawanna County Federation of Sportsmen’s clubs, member of the American Legion, and the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. He was Superintendent of West Abington Township for two terms.
He attended Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas. He was also an active member of the local VFW and American Legion in Bryan.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Anthony Lampo; sons Peter Northup and Clark and Randi Northup. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Tony and Grace Lampo; Brad, Shelby and Sam Northup; Cassidy, Chandler and Molly Northup; along with several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife Joan Dale Northup in 1991, and his grandson Lane Jarrott in 1998.
