Mary Lou Burr Walsh passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Mary was born in Madison County, TX to Della and Rollie Burr on September 8, 1933. She was a country girl, graduated from Madisonville High School, then set off to live in the big city of Bryan, TX with her sister Betty. It was there that she met the love of her life, Fred Walsh, on a blind date. They were married 18 months later after eleven dates while Fred was on leave from the Navy. They celebrated 62 years of marriage just three days before her passing. Mary and Fred made Houston their home in the 1950’s and retired to Katy, TX. They later moved to Sugarland to Greatwood Retirement Community in 2012. They are members of First Baptist Church of Katy, where they treasure their friends from their Sunday School Class. Mary leaves behind her beloved husband, Fred; one daughter, Katherine Walsh and husband Ron Noska; two sons, Marty Walsh and wife Kenda, and Michael Walsh and wife Ida Mary. Mary and Fred were blessed with one grandchild, Cameron Michael Walsh. She shared a special bond with Cameron and he shares her big brown eyes. She is also survived by her brother, Rollie; and many nieces and nephews. Mary’s family was her greatest blessing. She was a caring and loving wife and mother. She loved to travel, beginning with simple camping trips and eventually traveled the world with Fred. When recently asked about her favorite place she’s been, she responded, “Ireland, because the people were so nice.” Mary didn’t know a stranger and made friends everywhere she went. She was petite in stature but large at heart. She loved to cook for her family, her specialties being fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies, and German chocolate cake. She made a special birthday cake each year for those she loved. Mary also loved Danielle Steel novels, “Find a Word” puzzles, embroidery, playing Bingo and her dog, Bandit. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Timothy; sister, Betty; and her mother and father-in-law, who were her second parents as she lost hers at a young age, Burnice (G-Mom) and WP Walsh (G-Pop). Funeral Services are scheduled at Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan, TX on Saturday, March 14th. Visitation is from 10:00 AM-12 Noon with services at Noon and graveside services to follow at 3:00 PM at Rock Prairie Baptist Church Cemetery in Madisonville. Please wear red (Mary’s favorite color) in her honor. A memorial service is being planned at Greatwood Retirement Community in the near future. The family wishes to thank the staff at Houston Methodist Sugarland Hospital for their loving and compassionate care during her hospitalization. Chaplain Karen and Nurses Alanna, Ninjas, LaShelle, Huma, Ruby, Jennifer, and Annie will hold a special place in our hearts. Those wishing to honor Mary may do so by making donations to the charity of their choice. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7-8
