It was there that she met the love of her life, Fred Walsh, on a blind date. They were married 18 months later after eleven dates while Fred was on leave from the Navy. They celebrated 62 years of marriage just three days before her passing. Mary and Fred made Houston their home in the 1950’s and retired to Katy, TX. Mary and Fred were blessed with one grandchild, Cameron Michael Walsh. She shared a special bond with Cameron and he shares her big brown eyes. She is also survived by her brother, Rollie; and many nieces and nephews. Mary’s family was her greatest blessing. She was a caring and loving wife and mother. She loved to travel, beginning with simple camping trips and eventually traveled the world with Fred. When recently asked about her favorite place she’s been, she responded, “Ireland, because the people were so nice.” Mary didn’t know a stranger and made friends everywhere she went. She was petite in stature but large at heart. She loved to cook for her family, her specialties being fried chicken, chocolate chip cookies, and German chocolate cake. She made a special birthday cake each year for those she loved. Mary also loved Danielle Steel novels, “Find a Word” puzzles, embroidery, playing Bingo and her dog, Bandit. Mary Arnold McCulloch, 84, of Bryan, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 12, 2015. A time for family to receive friends will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas. On Monday, March 16, at 11 a.m. a memorial service will be at Central Baptist Church, 1991 FM 158, College Station, Texas with Pastor Chris Osborne officiating. Mary was born on January 21, 1931, in College Station, Texas, to Henry Freeman and Liddie Marquart Arnold. The sixth of 10 siblings, she deeply loved her community, family and friends. An eager student, she often recounted her school days including first grade at A&M Consolidated on the campus of Texas A&M College, followed by a year that she treasured at a one room country school in Wellborn and then returning to College Station to attend and graduate as in 1948 with her beloved classmates who were dear lifelong friends. She said, “I grew up in a time when life was simple and peaceful, however World War II had a definite impact on my family. Three of my brothers were in military service – two in the Navy were stationed in the Pacific theatre and one in the Army stationed in Europe. There were many anxious days when they were in battles, but our family was blessed that all returned home safely. “ On February 5, 1949 she married Charles McCulloch. Their romance began in wartime letters and their 64-year union stands as a shining example to their family. Their marriage lived out the scripture chosen for them by their pastor Newt Cole – 2 Timothy 2:15 – “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” Mary felt called by her Savior to be a full-time wife, mother and homemaker. She did so with all of her might. Her life was an image of the Proverbs 31 woman. Desiring to leave a legacy of faith, she was a prayer warrior who maintained a lifelong prayer list of family member and friends, noting when they accepted Jesus as their savior. Her children were taught scriptures and she held Bible studies for her grandchildren using imaginative methods to teach them God’s word. With an unerring devotion to her Lord and Savior she used her gift of hospitality, to host family gatherings complimented by her wonderful meals that were enjoyed at beautifully decorated tables. A gifted seamstress, she did alterations of Corps of Cadet uniforms, designed and created wedding gowns for family and clothing for her children and grandchildren. She counted it a privilege to make costumes for her church Easter pageant. An accomplished gardener and floral designer, she appreciated God’s creation and held a special love of cardinal birds. As an entrepreneur, Mary owned and operated The Added Touch – a gift and accessories business in Bryan where she created beautiful floral arrangements. She also built homes with her brothers. In their later years, she and Charles were blessed to live out their dream at “The Ranch” while gardening, raising cattle and hosting gatherings for friends and family. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents, sister Marjorie Eimann and brothers Milton, Bill, John, Aubrey and James. She is survived by children Charla Anthony and husband Mark; Mary Ann Ricca and husband David: son Clay McCulloch; grandchildren Kathryn Hardman and husband Ben, Lauren Ricca, Philip Anthony and wife Kelly, Rachel Burnett and husband Keith; John David Ricca, Colton McCulloch and Caylon McCulloch; great grandchildren Noelle and Hope Anthony and Hollynd Hardman; sisters Jane Pate and Margaret Mauro and brother Charles Arnold and his wife Lou; sister-in-laws Ruby, Olive, Mary, Lottie Ann and Jacque Arnold; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. The family expresses their gratitude to the many wonderful caregivers for the love, kindness and tender care provided to Mary. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to Central Baptist Church or the American Alzheimer’s Association.
